Misi Keselamatan: Metode Awal Misi CM di Indonesia
Abstract
This paper explores the theme of the mission of salvation within the context of the early works of the Congregation of the Mission (CM) in Indonesia during the period 1923–1945, encompassing the arrival and ministry of Dutch Vincentian missionaries up to the end of the Japanese occupation. Using a historical approach combined with theological and ecclesiological reflection, this study seeks to reveal that the work of the CM missionaries was not merely an episode in the Church’s missionary history, but a concrete manifestation of human participation in the missio Dei—God’s saving mission for all humanity. The findings show that the early Vincentian mission in Indonesia was deeply rooted in the spirituality of St. Vincent de Paul, which emphasizes love expressed through concrete acts of service for the poor and the humble. Through prayer, education, healthcare, and the witness of faith amid the sufferings of wartime, the CM missionaries embodied the image of a Church that serves and saves. Thus, the CM mission in Indonesia during the period 1923–1945 can be understood as a historical expression of the universal proclamation of salvation, grounded in the saving love of Christ for all people.
