Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between contemplation and service in the spirituality of Saint Vincent de Paul, which is known as the path of charity. Contemplation is not an attitude of withdrawing from the world; rather, it is a profound relationship with God rooted in love and expressed through concrete actions. In Vincentian spirituality, prayer and service are inseparable: genuine contemplation gives birth to charity, while authentic charity inspires service to others, especially the poor and the suffering. Through his exhortation, “Go to the poor,” Saint Vincent de Paul emphasizes that an encounter with God should move a person beyond oneself toward compassionate service. The poor are regarded as a privileged place of encounter with Christ Himself; therefore, serving them becomes a tangible expression of communion with God. A reflection on the teachings of Saint Vincent de Paul, enriched by the example of the Desert Fathers such as Abba Agathon, shows that contemplation forms a heart that is sensitive to the suffering of others. In a modern world that tends toward individualism, Vincentian spirituality remains relevant because it invites believers to live out a faith that is social, transformative, and fruitful in concrete acts of charity.
